Hello 6th-8th grade parents. I am thrilled to inform you of many updates and changes that are coming for your JR High student this January. As you probably know classes resume this Sunday January 8th and Wednesday January 11th. We have significant changes coming to both our Sunday and Wednesday program. I know many of you from work that I have been a part of when your students were younger. I have been assisting with a few things with JR High this last season, but I am now going to provide more oversight and programming for JR High students. I have been working in partnership with Whitney Eiden, Kyle Winter, Brent Shultz, and Curt Koehlmoos the last month to restructure our programs. The program changes are significant and very exciting. The changes are being put in place to increase engagement of our children and to deepen their learning and faith development.
Here is how the changes break down
Sunday
- Newly re-finished room, just for junior high students (THE CAVE)
- New class structure, featuring exciting guest speakers
- Each week students will hear and talk with speakers that are sharing about faith and mission. We have an amazing line-up of people from Homeless teen ministries, Open Door Mission, Missionaries working throughout the world, Prison ministers, and many more.
- Small group discussion and study time each week for half of the class time
- Free breakfast snacks each week
- A real focus on developing Disciples
Wednesday 6th and 7th Grade
- Both Kyle Winter and I will be joining Brent and Curt to teach segments of classes each week
- Each week students will engage in a Bible study and prayer time, and use of their Catechism
- Learning is broken into 3 segments (Bible Study, Core teaching, Active learning)
- Increased opportunities to build relationships with peers and teachers
- With the 3 segments, we will have smaller number of students in a classroom at one time – so there will be more attention and engagement
- Home Memory assignments – Parents we will require you to spend 5-10 minutes a week with your child reviewing the Memory Verse
- There is a strategic and progressive learning scope and sequence for students carrying from one year to the next
- 8th Grade – Pastor Tim will spend 3 weeks with this class and Vicar Justin will be join this class after that

Want to join in the fun?
That would be great – you will get a chance to help each week with your child’s memory work. We will send home a list of memory verses for you to work on with your child. There are 3 easy steps that we will have you take with your child to help them complete this requirement each week. You will receive instruction this Wednesday. We would Love to have you join us as a table leader or helper on Sunday or Wednesday night. If you would like to join us – please just let us know.
Service Projects
For our Service Projects – we will be working on interconnected missions at the Open Door Mission. We would like you to attend with your child if you are able to. 6th Grade -- February 25, 2012 SERVICE PROJECT - Saturday service at the Open Door Mission 1:00pm-3:00pm 7th Grade -- March 11, 2012 SERVICE PROJECT - Sunday service and Chapel at the Open Door Mission 4:00pm - 7:30pm 8th Grade -- March 3, 2012 SERVICE PROJECT - Saturday service at the Open Door Mission 9:00am-11:00am
JR HIGH LOCKIN
Mark your calendar – we’re having a Junior High Lock-In! The doors open at 9:00 p.m. Friday, January 20 and lock at 9:15. The doors will unlock again at 9:00 a.m. the next morning for pick-up. We’ll play games, eat food, join in fellowship and have a great time. Cost is just $5 and a snack. 6th graders should bring a 2-liter, 7th graders should bring a bag of chips and 8th graders should bring a dessert. Your friends are definitely invited! Questions? CDT 6th and 7th grade
Parents – Please note that we have homework for you to do each week with your child. This should only take 5-10 minutes a week. We are requiring your initials each week to indicate that you and your child have reviewed the memory verse each week. We sent these forms home this last Wednesday night. The assignments are also included here. Please make sure that your child is completing these each week prior to class. We will verify it each week and will have a few tests for them on these verses throughout the 11 weeks. We will update you on where your child is at on Sermon Summary requirements – please make sure your child is completing these, as it is required to have 12 summaries done by the end of this CDT year (March 28).
