Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church  ~ Fall 2011  ~ Adult Bible Studies
SUNDAYS
Prayer
(Sep. 11 - Oct. 9)
(Nov. 13 - Dec. 18)
9:30-10:30 a.m.
Luther Chapel
Pastor Hannemann and Pastor  Lawson

What is prayer? It’s a simple enough questions and a natural place to start.
Perhaps just as good a question is “What isn’t prayer?” This too, we will investigate in the sessions ahead. Prayer, quite simply, is speaking to God what is in our hearts. Prayer is not a means through which God speaks to us; God speaks to us through His Word. In prayer, then, we have the privilege of striking up a conversation with our Creator. He speaks to us through His Word, and we respond to Him through prayer.

But leading their families at home in a God-honoring way? That takes courage.
Four sessions include:
Courageous Call: Fighting for Your family

Generosity: Moving Toward Life that is Truly Life

(Oct. 16 - Nov. 6)

9:30-10:30 a.m.

Luther Chapel

Pastor Hannemann and Pastor Lawson

Inside the soul of every Christian is a God-inspired desire for the generous life — a life tailored around Jesus’ example of selflessness and sacrifice. But this generosity is often dormant. How do we shake ourselves from complacency to experience the joy of giving? This 4-week class explores how generosity is fundamentally intertwined with our Christian DNA.

God Is Closer Than You Think

(Nov. 13 - Dec. 18)

9:30-10:30 a.m.

Room 15

TBA

If God is always with us, why is He sometimes so hard to find? If the Lord says His sheep know His voice, why doesn’t He talk to us? If God is as relational as the Bible says He is, how can we learn to recognize His presence?
The Bible is filled with examples of an intimate God, a God keenly interested in connecting with ordinary people. He promises to be with us. He says He will personally guide us. Yet somehow, intimacy with God eludes us. Caught up in the mainstream of life, we know we’re missing something vital. But how do we attain it? God Is Closer Than You Think shows how you can enjoy a vibrant, moment-by-moment relationship with your heavenly Father. Not some abstract theological concept, but the real deal - intimate connection with a deeply personal God?

You know God’s promises, but are they for you, are they for now, are they for this? If you look to your circumstances alone, it may seem that God has forgotten you. But He hasn’t. He can’t. And He wouldn’t even if He could. God is the only promise maker who is always a promise keeper. And God’s promises will never fail you! Bible teacher and inspiring Women of Faith speaker Sheila Walsh searches Scripture for what God has promised us, what God’s promises mean, and how encounters with Christ are the eternal fulfillment of His unrelenting commitment to us. Through vulnerable storytelling and powerful, in-depth teaching, Sheila offers a life-changing study on ten bedrock promises of God, providing the foundation for daily confidence, joy, hope — and shelter.

TUESDAYS

Pastor Hannemann’s Study: The Quest for Spirituality

(Sep. 6 - Dec. 20)

10:00-11:15 a.m.

Luther Chapel

Pastor Hannemann

Four days in August 1967 made eastern spirituality a permanent part of western subculture. The Maharishi Mahash Yogi announced that he would give a final lecture on transcendental meditation before he took a vow of silence. The
Beatles rock group rushed to catch the lecture. The next day, they followed the Maharishi on retreat in Wales to learn his technique for meditation. While they were on retreat, the Beatles’ friend and manager, Brian Epstein, suddenly died.
And the icons of British rock and roll publicly committed themselves to the quest for enlightenment. Since the cultural ferment of the late 1960s, new types of spirituality have spiced western religious life like saffron-topped burgers or curry-filled hot dogs. Today’s quest for spirituality is sophisticated, combining science-based methods and ancient traditions to offer more credible approaches. This study will introduce you to several of the most popular quests for spirituality. It will critique their claims and consider them in view of the teachings of the Bible.
It will reveal to you God’s quest, how in loving-kindness He seeks you through His Son, Jesus Christ. Oh, and incidentally, the Maharishi never took that vow of silence in the summer of 1967.

Have you been in the presence of passionate believers who shared stirring encounters with God’s voice while your own soul overflowed with confusion? How did these saints know God was speaking?
No blessing surpasses a relationship with God in which you know when He is specifically calling to you. The more intimate your relationship with Him, the clearer God’s voice becomes.
Discerning the Voice of God provides participants with practical help in knowing what you hear is from God. Through this study you will become more familiar with God’s Holy Spirit, His character, language, and tone of voice.

This Bible study for women looks at the heart of what women are thinking and feeling. Angela Thomas speaks to participants about deep feelings that all women have at one time or another. It takes a brave woman to ask these questions and dig into these topics alongside other believers. We’ve all got insecurities, flaws, and struggles that we’re afraid to address. But if we can be brave enough to raise the questions. God will answer us. You’ve got questions, God's got answers. Be brave. Ask:
*Why can’t I get it together?
*Am I as invisible as I feel?
*What am I so afraid of?.

As the QB who led Baylor to their first Southwest Conference Championship in 50 years, Neal brings a level of “pep talk”, enthusiasm, and passion to every presentation that is rarely seen. His background in sports provides him a unique platform to challenge men to “make life count where it matters most.” In this study, we examine the life of the Christian man, and the six elements that all Christian men long to embody. These include; A Man Who Believes, A Man Who Builds, A Man Who is Brave, A Man Who is Blessed, A Many Who Behaves, and A Man Who is Loved.

6:30-8:00 p.m.

Room 17

TBA

They’ve got cell phones and instant messaging - so why is it so hard to communicate with teens? Maybe it’s not just a question of knowing how or where to reach them; maybe it’s also important to understand how they communicate.
Through his previous best-selling Five Love Languages resources, Dr. Gary D. Chapman has helped thousands of couples improve their relationships with each other and with their children. Now he takes on an even greater challenge - spanning the proverbial “generation gap” between adolescents and adults.
Parents will learn that even teens understand and show love in different ways - some prefer gifts, others physical affection, some enjoy quality time, others prefer acts of service, and still more respond to words of affirmation.
Although these resources won’t teach you the latest phrases in the world of slang, they are invaluable for anyone who has a responsibility and a heart for today’s teenagers. Because communicating with teenagers is far easier when they know they are loved.
